Formula E Gen3 spec revealed
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) first shared a third-generation all-electric racing car for Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Valencia, Spain during pre-season testing for Season 8 of the championship, which begins in January 2022.
While Formula E manufacturers take delivery of Gen3 cars in spring 2022 following further intensive development testing on and off the track, the briefing in Valencia disclosed a series of design, performance, and sustainability innovations in the Gen3 car.
Gen3 Formula E delivers up to 350kw of power (470BHP), capable of a top speed of 200mph (320 km/h). The power-to-weight ratio of the powertrain represents a two-fold increase in efficiency compared to an equivalent 470BHP internal combustion engine (ICE). ABB FIA Formula E Gen3 Concept. Photo (FIA)
The cars will have both front and rear powertrains, with the front MGU solely providing 250kW of regeneration and the back providing 350kW for a total regenerative capability of 600kW. The entire car will be lighter and smaller than the Gen2 to enable faster, more agile wheel-to-wheel racing.
With the addition of the front powertrain and its regenerative capability, the car will not feature hydraulically powered mechanical brakes at the rear. The races will see at least 40% of the energy used within a race produced by regenerative braking during the race.
The Gen3 is the first formula car aligned to life cycle thinking with a ...
