BMW joins Touring Car winners
BMW has become the fifth manufacturer in five races to triumph in the 2016 British Touring Car Championship.
In the second of today’s three races at Donington Park the West Surrey Racing BMW 1 Series of Rob Collard took the lead from the pole-sitting Motorbase Ford Focus of Matt Jackson with two of the 19 laps left, and held on to score his 12th BTCC victory.
Race one winner Jackson had led from the start of the second race, holding on despite two safety car periods closing up the field following accidents. The Speedworks Toyota of Tom Ingram held second place early on, with Collard and team-mate Jack Goff chasing, as the challenge from the MGs faded, Ashley Sutton in particular dropping down the field as his soft tyres wore out. Ingram’s challenge came to an end when he was forced onto the grass by the chasing BMWs, and he faded to an eventual 13th place finish. Meanwhile the Volkswagen CC of Aaron Smith and Gordon Shedden’s Honda Civic were progressing through the field, and despite battling each other secured third and fourth spots, Smith’s podium finish particularly impressive in his 2015-spec Volkswagen.
The final BTCC race of the day is at 17.17 ? check back to CarandVanNews for a full report.
