In a landscape where manufacturers are putting out performance cars with numbers that look more like SAT scores than horsepower or torque outputs, Saleen Automotive and its amped-up power strategy has lost a bit of its wow factor. So, it’s adding a little extra visual flair to its current product line. Drawing on its history, the California-based company has announced the Championship Commemorative Edition Mustang, a package that harks back to the 1987 SCCA Escort Endurance Championships that Saleen’s race team won.

These commemorative editions are based on Saleen’s Ford Mustang S302 Black Label, which was introduced in 2015. There will be two versions: one for the street, and one for track use in the SCCA. Both use a 3.2-liter liquid-cooled supercharger on top of the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 that Saleen claims can now make 730 horsepower in the street version and 750 in the racer. Changes from the 302 Black Label cars include a new exhaust system, the return of a Racecraft suspension with special camber caster plates, and a competition shifter. The track cars will be sans rear seat, and also will have an upgraded radiator, a four-point roll cage, and a four-point harness. Just like it did back in 1987, Saleen is once again partnering with General Tire as a sponsor. For its part, General Tire is launching a new product for the vehicle, the G-MAX RS ultra-high-performance tire.
