Skoda VisionS Concept Provides Glimpse of VW’s Three-Row SUV
Details about Volkswagen’s upcoming, Tennessee-built mid-size crossover are scarce, but for a view through a Czech lens at what it could look like, peep Skoda’s VisionS concept. Just like VW’s upcoming crossover, it’s based on the MQB modular-transversal architecture, it’s quite large (185.0 inches long, 75.2 inches wide, 66.1 inches tall), and it is fitted with a psychologically indispensable feature to those shopping in the huge family-crossover market: three rows of seating.
The VisionS is powered by VW’s 1.4-liter TSI engine, rated at 156 horsepower and driving the front wheels. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission incorporates a small electric motor that produces up to 64 additional horsepower. There is more electrification, as all-wheel drive is enabled by an additional 115-hp electric motor that powers the rear wheels. Total system output with all power sources up and running comes in at 225 horsepower.
To provide enough juice for the electric motors and “up to 19 miles” of fully electric range, the VisionS is fitted with a large lithium-ion battery pack ahead of the rear axle. Fuel economy on the European plug-in-hybrid test cycle?which is quite favorable to vehicles of this type, to say the least?is 124 mpg.
