Controversy quickly surrounded the Jeep Cherokee when it replaced the wheezy old Liberty for 2014. Jeep-ophiles bemoaned the base Cherokee?s transverse-drivetrain architecture rather than the longitudinal rear-drive layout used in the Liberty and the Cherokee?s namesake predecessors sold between 1974 and 2001.
