VW concept points to future electric MPV
Volkswagen is unveiling a new concept at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show that previews a future production all-electric MPV.
The BUDD-e, debuting at the CES in Las Vegas, has an electric all-wheel-drive powertrain with a claimed range of up to 233 miles. It is housed within an MPV-style body recalling VW?s much-loved Microbus.
Based around VW?s newly developed Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) the system uses two motors ? one mounted on the front axle with 148bhp and the other on the rear producing 168bhp.
Volkswagen says that the BUDD-e ?opens a window to the year 2019?, demonstrating how much travel will change in the next three years.
As well as electric powertrains with a range comparable to current petrol-powered cars and battery charging time to 80 per cent capacity reduced to as little as 15 minutes, VW believes cars will also boast fully connected interiors. Travellers in a BUDD-e equivalent will be able to access various aspects of their home from the car, and using a tablet indulge in such niceties as programming songs to start at specific points along the car?s route.
Switches and buttons will become a thing of the past on future cars, with even the BUDD-e?s doors being opened by a mere gesture towards them.
By 2019 VW is expected to be offering a new electric MPV as part of its production car range. Possibly reviving the Microbus shape, it will be the standard bearer for a new range of much more efficient electric cars using the MEB.
