The M12 was McLaren’s customer car offered to privateers for the 1969 Can-Am season. Basically, it’s an upgraded version of the M6 chassis from two years earlier with a more aerodynamic body and an 800-hp Chevy big-block in the middle. Here’s driver Andy Craig experiencing how much heat that can generate from the passenger seat:

This particular M12 is one of only eight GT coupes ever made and the only one with the correct big-block, which was sold to Shelby in 1969 as a rolling chassis. In 1970, it went to Holman Moody, and that firm passed it on to Victor Franzese in 1971. Franzese?s shop completed the car, after which a chap called Pete Sherman went racing with it twice in the 1972 Can-Am season. Since he didn’t crash, this M12 GT has remained in remarkably original condition despite changing hands numerous times.
Officially registered as a road-legal car in California since 1976 and in the European Union since 1994, McLaren M12 number 60-14 is the car you can drive from London to the big Sainsbury’s supermarket in Chichester, five minutes from the circuit where it will do this:

Offered now by Kastner’s Garage by way of Hemmings and currently residing in Europe, this car is subzero cool. The asking price is 660,000 euros, or about $740,000.
