Sun Chaser: Volvo Turns XC60 into Retina-Friendly Eclipse Viewing Station
Monday, August 21, 2017, will mark the first time in more than 38 years that parts of the United States will be able to witness a solar eclipse in its totality. Although most eclipse viewers will be relegated to staring at the phenomenon behind ISO-certified 12312-2 sunglasses while standing outside in the hot and humid summer air, Volvo will offer a handful of eclipse enthusiasts the opportunity to watch the rare celestial event from the comfortable confines of the 2018 Volvo XC60.
A handful of the Swedish automotive brand’s dealers in Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Missouri, and South Carolina?states in the path of the eclipse?will sell a tailor-made eclipse viewer that magnetically attaches to the roof of the XC60. The lens covers the $42,495 crossover’s standard panoramic sunroof with an eclipse-friendly ISO-certified 12312-2 transparent material that will allow up to five people within the XC60 to witness the moon walk across the sun’s face. Volvo will also livestream the eclipse in 4K on its Racing The Sun website.
