Pickup-truck makers have suddenly discovered Alaska. Renault named its new pickup after America’s 49th state, and now Chevrolet has slapped the same moniker, “Alaskan,” on a version of its Silverado HD pickup?and one-ups the Renault with its grizzly-bear graphic.

Unveiled as a concept at the 2016 SEMA show, the Alaskan Edition features a huge stainless-steel snowplow. Powered by General Motors’ revised 6.6-liter Duramax diesel with (naturally) four-wheel drive, the show truck rolls on 20-inch chrome wheels. Plenty of chrome elsewhere?bumper, grille, mirrors?accents the blue-and-silver exterior.
But the Alaskan isn’t just a show pony. It also is coming to dealerships for 2017, with slightly different equipment but the same snow-clearing mission. The production version comes with the Snow Plow Prep package (but not the plow), 18-inch wheels (in gloss black) with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, trailering mirrors, auxiliary switches, roof marker lights, a spray-in bedliner, and rubber flooring. It’s available on four-by-four Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD WT and LT models, in regular, double-cab, or crew-cab body styles, with either the gasoline or diesel V-8.
