Sleep in the Country in Your Countryman, Man
The Mini Cooper Countryman is the Mini for adventurers. With available all-wheel drive and a reasonable 6.5 inches of ground clearance, the Countryman can go places other Minis only dream of. Adding to the subcompact crossover’s spirit of adventure is a new rooftop-mounted tent.
Built by the Italian vehicle-tent manufacturer Autohome, the rooftop tent attaches to the Countryman’s available roof-rail carrier crossbars (a $268 option from Mini), which connect to the crossover’s standard roof rails. Available in either black or white fiberglass, the folding tent is opened by releasing a trio of safety clasps, after which a quartet of gas-pressurized springs do the work of raising the contraption’s roof.
Erected, the tent measures a little more than two feet tall. Needless to say, this is a cozy kingdom. Still, at 6.9 feet long and 4.3 feet wide, the rooftop tent promises comfort for those content to sit or lie on the high-density mattress, which can sleep two people. Mini touts additional niceties within the tent, such as an LED interior light, a host of storage nets and pockets, and a pair of zipper-opening doors and windows incorporated into the tent’s fabric sides. An aluminum ladder is also supplied to ease entry and exit into the sleeping area.
