Raider of the Rebadge: Ram 1200 Is a Mitsubishi Pickup for the Middle East
A Ram pickup ready to battle the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma is coming. Alas, there are no plans to sell it in the United States.
Like the tiny Ram 700 sold in Mexico, the Ram 1200 is a simple rebadge of an existing product, in this case the Mitsubishi L200. Made for the Middle East market, the Ram 1200 will be produced in both single- and double-cab variants. Single-cab models feature a massive 7.4-foot bed, while four-door double-cab 1200s have a smaller, 5.0-foot bed. Both offer two- or four-wheel drive.
Our truck-loving counterparts in the Middle East will be able to choose between two engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 130 horsepower, and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that produces as little as 126 horsepower and as much as 134. Compared with the North American?spec Chevrolet Colorado’s 200-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 181-hp 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder, the Ram 1200 appears woefully underpowered.
Comparing the Ram with the Chevy isn’t exactly apples to apples, however: The 1200’s 118.1-inch wheelbase is more than 10 inches shorter than the Colorado’s. In overall length, though, less than two inches separate the four-door Ram 1200 and the four-door Colorado.
