Oh, the Huge Vanity: UAE License Plate Sells for $9M at Auction
Having the just-right vanity plate can be an important automotive accessory, as Balwinder Sahani certainly would attest. According to Bloomberg, at an auction in the United Arab Emirates, the Indian businessman paid 33 million dirhams ($9 million) for a prestigious low-number UAE license plate: D5.
The D5 was the marquee plate at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s recent auction, which sent out an image of the plate with the come-on: “Admired by millions. Driven by one.” No doubt the D5 plate will help Sahani’s Rolls-Royce garner even more envious stares than usual on Dubai’s notoriously crowded streets.

Nine million bucks may seem like a lot of coin, but it’s not even close to qualifying for the most expensive license plate ever sold at auction. That honor goes to another Abu Dhabi plate, this one with the number 1, which fetched 52 million dirhams ($14 million) back in 2008.
