The GT wasn’t enough. The GT350 didn’t suffice. Neither did the GT350R, the GTE, the GT350R-C, or the GT4. Ford Performance looked at the Mustang, saw more potential, and decided it still needed to have another go at it. The result is the Shelby FP350S.
Revealed this week at the 2016 Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis, the FP350S is a track-only specimen designed for Trans Am, NASA, and SCCA or other similar club racing. Like its relatives before it, this turnkey Mustang has at its heart a 5.2-liter, 32-valve V-8 from Ford Performance Parts. That’s linked to a Tremec 3160 manual transmission with a 3.73 rear final-drive ratio. It also has a ?performance oriented? oil pan and oil cooler, a racing exhaust, and a MOTEC data-acquisition system.
Helping to gird it for track duty are racing suspension components, recalibrated electrically assisted power steering, a modified unibody chassis with seam welding, racing brakes, and 19-by-10.5-inch front and 19-by-11-inch rear wheels (with optional forged 18-by-11-inch race wheels). Inside, it has a six-point FIA-level roll cage, a Sparco racing seat, and a quick-release steering wheel. A Ford Performance splitter and a giant adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing help on the aerodynamic front, and optional custom Shelby graphics add extra points for style.
