The recently refreshed 2017 Lexus IS isn’t content to announce itself with a press release and a lease deal. Just last month, it doused itself in Thai hot sauce, and now becomes a rolling Jumbotron that struts its sparkly stuff in a music video. We can’t remember when a BMW 3-series had this kind of fun.
This customized Lexus appears in a music video for the emerging British pop singer Dua Lipa, whose name may refer to a delicious double IPA. The car’s body is covered with 41,999 LEDs?not 42,000?which do all the expected LED tricks, including tracing patterns, shifting color, flashing, strobing, and responding to the boom-boom beats of the club. Just as Kanye West opined about his Mercedes-Benz, this Lexus is so trendy it could even be allowed in the club.

Lexus attached a mile’s worth of wiring and 20 processors, so we can only hope it’s an IS350 underneath to handle all that extra weight (the base turbocharged IS is sluggish wearing nothing more than paint). Still, this effort is a lot more impressive than gluing 35,000 Swarovski crystals to a Lexus CT200h, which we saw at SEMA. But this is also a pretty big undertaking for a few moments of video fame. We might have just aimed one of those laser star projectors at a white car while enjoying a strong, hoppy Dua Lipa.
