The stint lengths at Le Mans are limited by fuel, not tyres. It is a balance between extending the stints to reduce the number of pitstops overall, but then having to fuel save which can lose up to 3 seconds a lap for LMP2 for example. Expected stint lengths for LMP1 is 13 laps, but 14 is also looking achievable and for LMP2, we are likely to see 10 lap stints.
The optimum strategy for this type of race is almost impossible to determine. Do you go for an aggressive start, completing 3 stints on the same tyre during the opening stages of the race, but then have to complete more pit stops, or do you try and eke out the performance of the tyres across 5 stints in the heat of the day" Or should you save your 5 stint tyres for the night where temperatures are cooler and perform better, but then with the increased likelihood of slow zones and Safety cars will you end up with less grip because your tyres are too cold"
A Team?s strategy will change and evolve with every incident, variation in temperature or technical issue. Furthermore, only when you are actually racing can you start to analyse the true race pace of your competitors and therefore calculate your counterattack.
There are also the additional issues created by the higher temperatures. The fatigue of the driver and team will increase, and consequently their inefficiencies. Engine and gearbox temperatures will need maximum cooling to minimise the chance of issues and maximise performance.
