Hyundai is recalling 977,778 Sonata sedans in the United States to fix seatbelt pretensioners that may fail in a crash, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The 2011?2014 Sonata and 2011?2015 Sonata hybrid are affected. The anchor pretensioners for the front seats, which are mounted at the floor of each B-pillar, may not have been fully connected with the seatbelt linkage during assembly at the company’s Montgomery, Alabama, plant. Hyundai said it first discovered the problem in September when a customer in a 2013 Sonata reported the front passenger seatbelt detaching during a crash. A similar problem happened in November. Since then, Hyundai and the pretensioner supplier, ZF-TRW, have been attempting to determine the cause.

At least one injury has been reported. Although the Sonata hybrid is built in South Korea, Hyundai is also including that model in the recall and has not specified an exact remedy. Owners will be contacted beginning in April.
