Hyundai Recalls 41,000 Tucson Crossovers for Failure to Accelerate
Hyundai is recalling 41,000 Tucson crossovers that may not accelerate, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The 2016 Tucson equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has a software glitch that can delay acceleration from a stop for as long as two seconds. Hyundai discovered the problem in June after receiving an unspecified amount of “vehicle will not move” reports from customers, during which cars would rev in neutral without engaging first gear. When this happens, the cars will not accelerate at all if the gas pedal is repeatedly pressed, but Hyundai says that if steadily pressed for “1.5 to 2.0 seconds,” the clutch will wake up and acceleration will resume.

While this problem is obviously dangerous, there have been no reported accidents, according to Hyundai. Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module at a later date.
