The first thing to clarify when talking about regulations is who does what. ?The FIA is the regulator of F1, and F1, formerly known as Formula One Management [FOM], is the promoter and the commercial rights holder,? clarifies Pat Symonds, Chief Technical Officer at F1. ?In the past there was a very distinct difference but there is a lot more integration now. All the work that we [F1] do, is to try and help the FIA produce regulations that will enhance the product for us. The FIA can listen to us and work with us, but ultimately it?s only the FIA who decide the regulations.?
To help guide the FIA, the new F1 owners, bought together Ross Brawn and Pat Symonds to spearhead an experienced engineering team and the future of F1. ?Right at the beginning of the process, Ross and I sat down in early 2017 and we took a rough look at everything. Obviously, the ultimate aim is to improve the spectacle of the sport and boost the fanbase, but we also looked at what was wrong with F1, and the answer was not very much, but we wanted to improve it,? explains Symonds.
