Honda is recalling 350,083 Civic sedans and coupes in the U.S. to fix electronic parking brakes that may be disabled, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Like it or not, mechanical hand-lever and foot-pedal parking brake controls are being replaced by pushbutton electronic versions that free up interior space. The 2016 Civic made the switch, but faulty software for the Civic’s electronic stability control can disable the parking brake after the car is shut off. If the driver tries to apply the brake with the engine off, the parking brake light may flash on the instrument panel for 15 seconds to indicate a fault. Honda said it discovered the problem in December 2015 from a warranty claim and has since received 341 more claims through the beginning of October.
Upon shutdown, the tire-pressure-monitoring system writes data to the stability control ECU for several seconds and blocks the parking brake from sending signals to the same computer. Honda is releasing a software update starting in November. Until then, Honda advises owners to set the parking brake before turning their car off. No accidents, injuries, or rollaways have been reported, Honda said.
