Magna Steyr will build the next BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra at its assembly plant in Graz, Austria.
The jointly developed sports cars will both be assembled by the contract manufacturer, according to a report in Automotive News Europe. Magna Steyr is a favorite producer for low-volume specialty models such as the Mercedes-Benz G-class, which it began building in 1979 under the Steyr-Daimler-Puch name, and more mainstream models from automakers that can’t retool or expand production capacity at existing plants. Magna is also currently building the Jaguar E-Pace compact crossover and the electric I-Pace, plus certain versions of the BMW 5-series. It can crank out as many as 200,000 vehicles per year.
While enthusiasts like us clamor for these rear-wheel-drive cousins, they’re a very small market among the conventional crossovers and hatches that dominate global auto sales. But judging from recent concept cars (shown above), we’re guessing the market will accommodate the Austria-built Japanese coupe and Bavarian roadster without much trouble.
