For the fourth consecutive year, General Motors tops the Made in America Automotive Index conducted by American University’s Kogod School of Business. The Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia tied for number 1, while 17 other GM vehicles ranked in the top 10.
The index is authored by Frank DuBois, a global supply chain management expert and professor at American University in Washington, D.C. The Kogod index, considered more comprehensive than related studies, ranks automakers on seven data points:
1.   Profit Margin: Location of the automaker’s global headquarters.
2.   Labor: Where the vehicle is assembled.
3.   Research & Development: Location of these facilities. 4.   Inventory, Capital, and Other Expenses: Location of assembly.
5.   Engine: Location of production.
6.   Transmission: Location of production.
7.   Body, Chassis, and Electrical Components.
According to the Kogod School of Business, 17.5 million vehicles were sold in the United States last year. Approximately 65 percent were produced in the United States. The auto industry employed 1.55 million workers and supported an additional 5.7 million jobs in service shops, retail parts stores, and car dealerships.
