Formula Hybrid 2016
Celebrating its 10th consecutive year, Dartmouth’s Formula Hybrid competition took place 2nd – 5th May at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire, USA. Founded and run by Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, the competition features high-performance hybrid and electric race cars built by teams of undergraduate and graduate engineering students. This year, 28 teams registered, including the competition’s first all-female team: Hot Wheelz from Rochester Institute of Technology.
Dartmouth based its event on the Formula SAE competition, in which the Dartmouth Formula Racing (DFR) team competed for over 10 years. As with other Formula SAE, students compete in aspects of design, acceleration, handling, and endurance of their vehicle however as the name of the competition suggests entries are restricted to just Hybrid cars or full EV’s.
With that in mind it is perhaps not surprising that the rate of attrition in the event has always been extremely high over the years, indeed 2016 was the first year ever that a car managed to complete the endurance event. The honour going to the University of Vermont with its EV car (below)
To ease the level of attrition during the event somewhat the organisers added an additional day of electrical tech inspection, and also pre-event electrical review three weeks before the competition?s start.
