For Some Bentley Owners, the Gas Station Now Comes to Them
Running a new Bentley down to empty doesn’t take long, and as with heavy-duty trucks, the thirsty machines’ only semblance of fuel economy is derived from their large gas tank. But if you drive a Bentley, live in California, and are incorrigibly lazy, you’re in luck: The geniuses of Silicon Valley have automated yet another life task.
Bentley wants to make customers feel extra special?or at least justify their $2000-per-month lease payments?by giving them the “ultimate time-saving luxury of never having to search for or stop at a fuel station again.” So it has partnered with Filld, a startup that will deliver gasoline to anyone in San Francisco and surrounding areas. The cost of Filld is the equivalent of calling roadside assistance every week or ordering takeout.
In a pilot project scheduled to expand, Bentley and Filld are testing connected-car technology to let the Bentley signal when it’s ready for a fill-up, without the tiresome need for owner involvement. Alternatively, Bentley owners can schedule a fill-up via app up to 48 hours in advance, or they can order one while they’re at a Giants game. The app pinpoints your car’s location, a Ford F-250 carrying 100-gallon tanks in the bed pulls up, and your Bentley gets a fresh tank of premium. (Sorry, Bentayga diesel buyers; Filld doesn’t carry the oily stuff.)
