For CES: Rinspeed’s Self-Driving EV Is Perfect for Growing Radishes
While some carmakers are losing interest in traditional auto shows, that doesn’t hold true for the Consumer Electronics Show, which seems to reel in more automotive companies each year. For 2017, Switzerland’s Rinspeed, which describes itself as a “creative think tank and mobility lab for the automotive industry,” and whose always-zany creations are a regular feature of the Geneva auto show, is wheeling out a concept car called the Oasis. And no matter how many other automakers show up at this year’s CES, we’ll bet the Oasis is the only show car to make accommodation for radishes.
Because it’s for CES, the Oasis, naturally, is an EV, with self-driving capability. But the two-seat city car, from the fertile but rarely practical mind of Rinspeed founder Frank Rinderknecht, offers much more. The runabout’s profile is dominated by enormous glass areas, the front wheels are covered, and the rears do the steering?which is great for maneuverability, if less so for stability.
The interior boasts “the ambience of a modern-day family room,” with an armchair and a TV. The windshield doubles as an augmented-reality screen. At its base is a small garden area, where Rinspeed suggests one might grow “flowers or radishes.” At the rear is a heated and cooled cargo drawer, which could be used for parcel or pizza delivery.
