FIA reveals new 2019 F3 car
The FIA have revealed their brand new 2019 F3 car in the F1 paddock at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. This new contender will race in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons and is the best compromise between the current GP3 Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
Running the natural aspirated 3.4L Mecachrome V6 engine, the car delivers 380bhp at 8,000rpm. The ethos behind the car is to reduce costs, while maximising performance, which is a difficult balance. However, in an attempt to achieve these targets, there are a lot of carry over parts from GP3 such as the engine, gearbox, electronics and rear wing to name a few. The brakes are also the same size as GP3, and the FIA have favoured the more traditional suspension setup with the dampers and springs on top of the chassis to save costs. Another focus area has been the aerodynamics to try and improve overtaking ? a theme consistent throughout all categories of formula racing at the moment. ?We?ve put a lot of effort into changing the shape of the wake of the leading car to avoid interference with the front wing of the trailing car,? highlights David Beck, responsible for the commercial development of GP2 and GP3 at Dallara. ?We?re trying to make the wake itself narrow and high as we don?t want it to be low and wide because that?s exactly what disturbs the front wing of the trailing car.
