Caterham Creates Awesomely Retro Version of the Already Retro 7
Caterham, keen on celebrating the 60th birthday of its 7 sports car’s Lotus forebear, is introducing an ultra-limited-production, vintage-themed 7 dubbed the Sprint. The special-edition 7 in old-timey garb was unveiled, appropriately enough, at the annual Goodwood Revival in England, which gathers old-timey speed machinery and crowds resplendent in old-timey period dress.Â
The retro-look 7 Sprint is based on the entry-level Seven 160 model. With an 80-hp turbocharged Suzuki three-cylinder engine under its long hood, the 160 is a far cry from the face-melting, track-destroying 310-hp 7Â 620 R. That is intentional: Outright ferocity has been shelved in favor of a more nostalgic driving experience that highlights the Seven’s light weight and simplicity.
The Sprint’s vintage cosplay is enhanced by its gray-colored chassis that mimics the looks of an early Lotus 7 and by its six available paint colors pulled straight out of 1957. There also are a number of other retro touches like cream-colored wheels with polished hubcaps, old-school taillights, and a polished side-exit exhaust. Inside, there is a wood-rimmed steering wheel, classically styled gauge faces, and red-leather seat upholstery and interior panels.
