Call Me Cullinan: Rolls-Royce?s SUV Gets a Name
Rolls-Royce’s forthcoming crossover SUV?or, in RR parlance, “high-bodied vehicle”?has been officially christened, and its name is no surprise. The model will be the Cullinan, which had been its internal code name.
Named after a famed 3106-carat diamond discovered in Cullinan, South Africa, more than a century ago, the British brand’s latest model will be built on the same aluminum chassis that underpins the Rolls-Royce Phantom ultraluxury sedan. Expect the Cullinan also to share the Phantom’s 563-hp twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
Unlike the rear-wheel-drive Phantom, however, the Cullinan is all but certain to come strictly with all-wheel drive. Thanks to its testing in areas such as the Arctic Circle, the Middle East, and the deserts of Africa, we expect the Cullinan to have some off-road chops as well. Not that we expect many Cullinan buyers will take their six-figure SUVs off the tarmac.

Rumor has it that the Rolls-Royce Cullinan will make its debut this summer, during Monterey Car Week. Regardless of where it shows its face, though, expect the Rolls-Royce of SUVs to wear a sticker price north of $300,000 when it goes on sale before the turn of the decade.
