Six thousand BMW 7 Series sedans, both the 6-cylinder & V-8 models, have been recalled due to an issue with an airbag control module. It affects cars that are already in the consumer’s hands and those that remain on dealer lots.
As a result, a stop-sale order has been issued.
According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report on the recall, a manufacturing error may have left metallic residue in some modules, creating the potential for a short circuit.
Under certain conditions, including “excessive vibration or acceleration,” residue particles will separate from the module and contact the circuit board, creating a potential short circuit. If a short happens, the module will reset. The airbags wont be able to deploy while the module is inactive, creating greater risk of injury if a short occurs during a crash.
The 2016 BMW 7 Series made its debut in June of last year with overall positive reviews. The recall might undo some of the great PR the company has managed to build prior and after the BMW 7 Series debut, but the module is replaceable free of charge.
The recall is expected to begin May 16th.
BMW will notify owners telling them what dealerships to take their cars to for the recall. The replacement should take about four hours. Dealers will have to do the same work on unsold cars before they can be sold.
