We?re digging Volkswagen’s latest Beetle trim. Called Coast, it builds on the 2018 Beetle?s S trim level and adds a bit of stylish verve to an interior that we generally already regard as one of the best designs in a reasonably priced vehicle.
The zazzy Coast swaps in Pepita cloth upholstery with a black and beige houndstooth pattern and a striking gray offset stripe running the length of the seat. The model also adds a special dash treatment that’s meant to evoke the look of a classic wooden surfboard. Rugged Monster Mats are there to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous seaside adventure, while the sill plates are similarly ruggedized. Outside, the rear end gets a spoiler. Buyers can opt for unique, Coast-only Deep Sea Teal paint, and the car rolls on 17-inch Heritage alloy wheels to complete the beach-retro vibe.
Additional fanciness includes a 6.3-inch Composition Media touchscreen infotainment system, automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles, power-operated heated side mirrors, and a power sliding/tilting panoramic sunroof. The only option is a lighting package, which upgrades the front lamps to bixenon and the rears to LED.
