The Volkswagen Jetta GLI’s manual transmission goes to the parts bin in the sky for the 2018 model year. Volkswagen’s sportiest Jetta now channels its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four’s 210 horses solely through the brand’s six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Jettas equipped with the entry-level 150-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four engine, however, will continue to come standard with a five-speed manual transmission, and it’s probable that the manual will return to the GLI order sheet when the redesigned 2019 model arrives next year.
In addition to this news, a new 2018 Wolfsburg Edition Jetta is sandwiched between the 1.4T-powered S and SE. The Wolfsburg Edition features a host of trim-specific features, including a more aggressive front bumper with integrated fog lights, Wolfsburg Edition badging on the B-pillars, its own aluminum wheels, a leather-covered shift knob, and vinyl seats with front-seat heaters.
Other changes for the Jetta’s 2018 model year include a new chrome grille on S, SE, and SEL models and standard aluminum wheels throughout the model line. In addition, last year’s Jetta 1.8T Sport is rechristened SE Sport and receives a host of minor styling changes. SE Sport and SEL models come standard with a 170-hp 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four that works exclusively through a conventional six-speed automatic transmission.
