When the Lexus GS arrived in the early 1990s?the original Giugiaro-designed one?its mission was to challenge the reigning mid-size luxury sedans from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz. Accordingly equipped with a choice of V-6 or V-8 engines, the second-generation model made such a convincing case that it won 10Best Cars accolades for three years running (1998 through 2000). It has been some time, though, since we could rank the GS at the top of the field.
