Volvo targets 5 Series with new S90
Volvo has revealed its S90, an all-new model line that is expected to take the brand into a new market, targeting the big-selling BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
According to its creators, the S90 is a giant step forward and ?Volvo Cars? entry ticket to the premium saloon club?.
Volvo Car Group president & CEO HÃ¥kan Samuelsson believes the S90 is the newest evidence of a statement of intent made with the recent launch of the latest XC90 SUV, bringing that car?s technologies, including its ?Scaleable Platform Architecture? into the premium saloon market.
?We are now clearly and firmly in the game ? with $11 USD billion of investment over the past five years, we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be ? we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand,? he says. Prime amongst these technologies is a semi-autonomous drive feature, as part of Volvo?s continuing progress on the road to driverless cars. Pilot Assist will make gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings on the road, up to speeds of around 80mph. The technology also no longer needs to be following another vehicle to function.
Other safety advances include an addition to the City Safety system that detects large animals ahead of the car, such as horses, at day or night. The system will warn of the danger and activate braking to help avoid a collision.
