Targa MX-5 adds colour to NY show
Mazda is debuting its MX-5 RF, the hardtop version of the latest MX-5 roadster, at the New York International Auto Show.
The RF designation stands for ?retractable fastback? and is the result of Mazda completely redesigning the folding mechanism of the hardtop MX-5.
In the new model the rear section of the roof hinges up as the top folds back to sit under the rear, the main advantage being no compromise in boot storage space, the RF retaining the same 130 litre capacity.
The system is reminiscent of the targa-style folding roof used by Porsche on its 911. It is also for the first time completely automatic, and can be operated on the move, though only at up to 6mph.
When the RF goes on sale it will be available with both MX-5 roadster powertrain options ? the 1.5 and 2.0-litre units, and with either the roadster?s six-speed manual gearbox or for the first time a six-speed auto which is only being offered on the RF. Mazda is yet to release performance figures for the new model but with around 40kg of extra weight the RF is expected to be slightly less sprightly than its open-top sibling.
Also debuting with the RF is a new colour, Machine Grey, described as a sleek, high-density finish giving the impression that the vehicle?s body was sculpted from a solid block of steel.
The MX-5 RF looks neat with roof open or closed.
