New Cayman cheaper than Boxster
Porsche has unveiled the fourth-generation version of its Cayman mid-engined Coupe.
Like its Boxster roadster sister model the newcomer gains an extra number to its name, now being known as the 718 Cayman recalling a Porsche model first made in the late 1950s and a regular race winner.
It is also for the first time being sold at a cheaper price than the Boxster. Prices start from £39,878 for the standard model, the more powerful S version retailing from £48,834.
The new Cayman is effectively a mid-life refresh and follows closely that of the Boxster unveiled in January, the two being mechanically identical. This refresh, however, extends to very significant engine changes ? while still of horizontally-opposed configuration, both engines are four-cylinder turbocharged units. The 2.0-litre version replaces the previous naturally aspirated six of 2.7 litres, and offers 25hp more power at 296bhp, along with torque increased by some 66lbft to 280lbft.
The Cayman S, meanwhile, drops its 3.4-litre flat six for a 2.5-litre turbocharged unit that makes use of a variable geometry turbine with a wastegate ? according to Porsche the only turbo petrol production car to do so. Power goes up, like its sister by 25bhp to 345bhp and torque  is improved across the entire engine speed range, increasing 37lbft to 310lbft.
