Lexus LC 500 coupe stars in Detroit
Lexus is proving a star of the Detroit Motor Show with the unveiling of the LC 500, a new flagship coupe model.
Evolved from the LF-LC concept first shown at the Detroit event in 2011, the LC 500 is seen as a prime weapon in attempts by Lexus to highlight its performance credentials.
According to its creators the luxury 2+2 coupe is a ?provocative, athletic flagship model (that) makes the strongest statement yet about the Lexus?s future product direction?.
The LF-LC debuts a rear-wheel drive platform which is part of a new global architecture dubbed GA-L that Lexus will be using on future vehicles. As well as being lightweight, achieved by such measures as aluminium door skins on carbonfibre structures and a boot floor in composite material, the car uses the most high-strength steel yet employed on a Lexus. This allows much more precise placing of components resulting in an almost ideal 52/48 front to rear weight distribution. The monocoque is described as the stiffest yet produced by Lexus, with more torsional rigidity than the brand?s LFA supercar, all of which aids predictable, consistent handling.
The LC 500?s exterior look transfers many elements directly from the LF-LC, with a notable element the option of replacing the standard-fit glass roof with a carbonfibre version. The signature Lexus spindle grille is framed by LED headlamps with notably thin projectors and L-shaped daytime running lights.
In profile the car boasts short overhangs of 920mm at the front and 970m...
