Ingram’s Toyota heads BTCC grid
Toyota will be on pole position for the opening round of Britain’s biggest motorsport series, the British Touring Car Championship, on Sunday (3rd April).
The Speedworks Motorsports Toyota Avensis of Tom Ingram was the only car to dip below 47 seconds in qualifying at Brands Hatch, the 22-year-old driver setting an early quickest time in a session hat was then slowed by a light drizzle of rain.
The two Halfords Yuasa Racing Honda Civic Type-Rs of reigning champion Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal took second and third places, Shedden just six hundredths down on Ingram, while the top five was completed by the West Surrey Racing BMW 1 Series of Sam Tordoff and the impressive rookie Ashley Sutton, making his BTCC debut in the Triple Eight Racing MG6. Best of the new four-strong Subaru Levorg squad run by Team BMR was 2014 champion Colin Turkington, who set a lap good enough for 11th place only 0.463 down on pole position, despite his car having only turned a wheel for the first time on Friday evening.
The session saw the first 22 cars on the 32-strong grid covered by a single second, with it generally being thought that the arrival of the rain had prevented a true indication being gained as to which teams are most competitive going into the first of the three races on Sunday. The 24-lapper, due off the grid at 11.32am, will be the more interesting as a result.
