Brussels bow for Evoque and Edge
Two new SUVs unveiled in Brussels demonstrate differing aspects of this now large market sector, reports John Elwin.
Once Ford owned Land Rover but now the former is trying to move towards the latter’s market with the Edge. First seen at the Frankfurt show in 2015, the Edge has this month gone on UK sale at prices starting from £29,995 and first deliveries expected in the summer.
The Edge is perceived as a Ford range-topper, and will sit above the existing Ecosport and Kuga models in the line-up to give the blue oval a three-strong SUV range.
Land Rover, meanwhile is making the most of the phenomenal success of its Range Rover Evoque model by launching a Convertible version. First seen at the Los Angeles show in November 2015, Brussels marks the official European debut of the drop-top Evoque. The model offers a new slant on the premium SUV market, with Land Rover keen to position it as the world?s first luxury convertible SUV. Order books are open now and it is expected on the roads before summer 2016, with prices from £47,500 ? £5,200 more than its hard-top sibling which equates to around the same mark up that is seen on convertible versions of premium saloons.
