718 reasons to buy mid-engined Porsches
Porsche is significantly revamping its mid-engined Boxster and Cayman sports cars with new engines, and giving them revised names.
Both will now carry a ?718? designation in their names, referencing the four-cylinder flat-engined cars raced highly successfully by Porsche between 1957 and 1962.
The cars will replace their current 2.7-litre and 3.4-litre six-cylinder engines with 2-litre turbocharged flat-four units, a configuration also used by Porsche?s 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car that won the 2015 Le Mans 24hr race. While it is not being stated, the move will significantly improve the economics of both the Cayman and Boxster.
