I?m on a Boat: Volvo Shows V90 Cross Country Ocean Race Edition
Volvo itself does not manufacture boats, but since 2001, the Swedish company has sponsored a grueling sailing competition called the Volvo Ocean Race. The 2017?2018 edition of this more than eight-month-long, around-the-world, open-water race began recently, and so Volvo has released a special Ocean Race version of its V90 Cross Country wagon to celebrate. This specially trimmed V90Â will be sold around the globe, with part of the proceeds of the first 3000 produced benefiting the Ocean Race’s science program. The connection is not entirely spurious: Boats competing in the race all have Volvo’s Penta marine diesel engines in them to generate onboard electric power and?in an emergency or for maneuvering in port?propulsion.
That said, as with previous Ocean Race editions, this special V90 Cross Country is essentially an appearance package. Exterior tweaks include Crystal White paint, a matte gray finish for the Cross Country’s lower cladding, 20-inch wheels with a unique design, and orange detailing on the front and rear skid plates that evokes the attractive Volvo Concept XC coupe shown a few years ago. The color scheme continues on the inside, with orange seatbelts, gray-accented seats, and orange piping on the seats and floor mats. It also includes accessories such as a flashlight, extra power outlets, and certain dirt- and water-resistant materials for when things get more adventurous.
