Mamma Mia: The Alfa Romeo Giulia Wagon Is Happening!
If Alfa Romeo wants its new Giulia sports sedan to truly go head to head with the BMW 3-series, it can’t afford to offer just one body style. That’s why we’re not too surprised to hear, from an Automotive News Europe report, that a Giulia wagon (rendered above) will likely join the sedan late next year. Beyond stoking the fires of wagon lovers like us, this more practical body style will help boost sales in Europe, where long-roof variants are more popular.
As for its chances of making it to the United States, we won’t get our hopes up. At this point, FCA says there are “no plans” for a Giulia wagon in North America. Given the current state of the market, it seems Alfa Romeo may instead concentrate on the launch of the Giulia-based Stelvio crossover in America, a new model that’s set to make its debut before the end of 2016. If Alfa is still considering bringing the potential Giulia wagon to our shores, we’ll happily point out that a Giulia wagon would at least have a fair amount of competition among luxury wagons in the U.S., what with BMW’s 3-series wagon, Volvo’s V60, and Audi’s Allroad all currently sold here. Less likely is a wagon version of the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio, as shown in the rendering above. However drool-worthy a 505-hp station wagon might be, there isn’t much call for such a model, despite the existence of a few niche wagons like the Volvo V60 Polestar.
