Hyundai’s Genesis concept, 3 Series rival"
This is the car likely to spearhead the ambitions of Hyundai?s premium sub brand, Genesis, to challenge the likes of the BMW 3 Series.
The ?New York Concept? is described by its creators as ?hinting at the future design direction? for the Genesis brand, and has been created by a team led by former Bentley design head Luc Donckerwolke.
However it is believed to be close to the look of the Genesis G70, which will be a production model launching into the fevered premium market battleground currently dominated by the 3 Series, Audi?s A4 and the Mercedes C-class.
Distinguishing features include the cab-rear layout with a long bonnet and the prominent, upright grille with dominant headlamps.
A 21-inch screen dominates the front of the cabin in the Genesis New York concept. The concept includes a hybrid powertrain, about which Hyundai is currently stating very little, the only technical details known being that the engine is a 2-litre turbo four cylinder with 242bhp, driving through an eight-speed auto transmission.
Immediately catching the eye in the cabin is the dash layout, which is based around a curved vertical screen above the steering wheel and stretching 21 inches right across into the passenger side of the cabin. It includes both driver controls and functions the passenger can use such as the infotainment.
So far Hyundai has given no indication as to what part Genesis will play in the UK market, or when.
